Safe Gaming

Online gaming can be a great way for kids to relax, have fun, and connect with friends — but it’s also important to help them understand how to stay safe while playing. Many online games connect players from around the world, often using screen names for gamer tags that don’t reveal real identities. That’s why it’s so important for families to be aware of potential risks like sharing personal information, online scams, and hidden financial charges in certain games or apps. Never share passwords.

Explore Online Games Together

One of the best ways to support your child’s online gaming is to get involved. Sit with them while they play, ask questions, and let them show you their favorite games — it’s a great way to learn more about what they enjoy and have fun together.

A few helpful tips for families:

  • Check game ratings before your child plays. Most games sold in stores are rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to help guide age-appropriate choices.
  • Stick to well-known, trusted gaming sites and apps. Sites like Xbox LIVE, MSN Games, or Nintendo Online are generally safer and reduce the risk of scams or harmful downloads.

Teach and Practice Safer Gaming Habits

Creating healthy, safe habits for online gaming is a community effort — and it starts at home.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Remind kids to keep personal information private. That includes their real name, address, phone number, age, school, or photos.
  • Use strong, secure passwords for all gaming accounts, with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Never share passwords. HISD will never ask for your password.
  • Help your child choose a fun, safe gamer name that doesn’t reveal personal details.
  • Talk about meeting online friends in real life. Younger kids should only play with people they know, while teens should have a safe plan in place if they ever meet someone in person — like bringing a trusted adult and choosing a public place.

When we stay involved, ask questions, and create open conversations about online gaming, we help our students stay safe, confident, and connected. Together, we can build a digital community that looks out for one another.
