FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT
October 26, 2023
Family Literacy Night is Back! After a hiatus due to the pandemic, Burbank Middle School is about to have its traditional Family Literacy Night this coming Thursday. As is also traditional, it will be the culmination of a month-long activity, called "One Semester, One Book" where the entire campus reads and discusses a book as well as carrying on various activities. Each student receives a copy of the book which they keep at the end of the activity.
One of the wonderful events of this activity is that the book's author is invited to come to our school, where our students have the opportunity to listen to the author speak about his or her experiences, ask questions, and have their book signed. This year's book is Invisible: A Graphic Novel by Christina Díaz González. The daughter of Cuban immigrants, Ms. Díaz González grew up in the Florida panhandle where she and her sister were the only Spanish speakers in her neighborhood. She grew up with many friends, riding her bike, and enjoying reading, curled up in her tree house. It was then that she dreamed of writing her own books. After studying law, marrying, and having a family, that dream of writing her own books came back. She says that "with the support of my parents, sister, husband, sons, and large extended family, I began to pursue that passion for writing."
