Las Americas Poets Honored

Las Americas 7th grade student Angie Bonilla won First Place for her poem "Life is Crazy" in the Mayor of Houston's annual Citizenship Month poetry event promoting literacy. Eighth-grader Atinaf Jimata received Honorable Mention for her work "Life is Like a Wind."

Angie was invited along with other winners from schools all over the city to read her poem in front of an audience of dignitaries and families at the Asia Society Center on November 7. Her poem and Atinaf's were exhibited at the Houston Public Library for Citizenship Month.

Their work was part of an English class project in which students reflected about their lives and wrote poetry using similes and metaphors to describe what life has been like to them. The project also involved using digital photography to help the students express their ideas, while developing technological skills on the computer.
