HISD Budget Shortfall

In June 2016, the HISD Board of Education passed the District’s 2016-17 budget.

The budget addresses a $95 million shortfall caused by the state’s school finance system.  HISD is now a “property wealthy” school district subject to sending a portion of our local tax revenue to the state.  However, most of our students are economically disadvantaged.  If the current school finance system remains unchanged for another year, HISD projects to lose $257 million in local taxes to the state in 2017-2018.  This would bring the two-year loss in local funding for Houston schools to an estimated $419 million.
