The Principal Candidate Development Opportunity (PCDO) was developed by the Leadership Development Department to fill anticipated principals’ vacancies in the Houston ISD with highly qualified internal candidates. This rigorous learning experience was created in partnership with Human Resources-Office of Talent Acquisition and the Office of School Support and is aligned with the District’s grow-your-own model of leadership development of aspiring campus principals.
PCDO learning focuses on expanding the aspiring principals’ knowledge and skills in the areas of instructional leadership, human capital, executive leadership, school culture, and strategic operations in the context of urban schools. Sitting HISD principals, School Support Officers, and other district leaders, along with the Leadership Development staff, serve as thought partners, guest speakers, and facilitators.
PCDO participants have multiple opportunities to apply the new learning in their current assignments and during monthly field experiences created for them to apply new knowledge and skills. Throughout the learning process, candidates receive individual feedback for continued professional growth. Additionally, the PCDO candidates participate in real-time skills demonstration activities called “Combine.” Hiring managers from all areas serve as assessors and provide real-time feedback to the candidates.
