Who is a Refugee?
Who is a refugee? A refugee is a person who has has “a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country…” (Article 1, The 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees).
The Multilingual Programs department provides support to newly arrived refugee students during their resettlement process in the United States. The RSI Team Members provide additional support to students and parents.
Services that may be provided:

- Counseling referrals - Enrollment guidance and support - Family engagement support - School integration and acculturation support - Coordinate appropriate services with area service providers |
In order for refugee students to receive specific support and services, the school district requires some form of documentation to verify their refugee status. This documentation may include but is not limited to:
Refugee Status Documentation: such as documentation from the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR)
Immigration Documentation: such as an I-94, refugee temporary visa
- These documents serve as eligibility information/evidence to provide appropriate assistance to meet the student's educational and emotional needs.
