Weekly Updates - August 7th, 2020

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your family are doing well.  We have been hard at work and we have quite a bit of exciting news to share.

1. I would like to thank Ms. Beth Jenkins for taking the lead on SPARK Park construction.  On her own time, Ms. Jenkins is meeting the architect, the admins, and fundraising for the park.  To date, she has raised over $20k for the second phase of SPARK Park construction.  Thank you, Ms. Jenkins!

2. Our Facebook and Twitter are back!  Thanks to Ms. Kirk and Ms. Taylor, they have volunteered to take on the role as MIMS PR.  They will be posting news, events, and other good stuff on MIMS official social media platform.  Please “friend us” (@hisdmims) and “follow us” (@HISD_MIMS).

3. Technology devices donations.  Parents, if you answered yes to technology donation, thank you for your kindness.  We are deeply grateful for your generosity.  We are making drop off plans.  In a week or two, we will reach out to you individually for more details.

4. Ms. Yin, Ms. Obando and I are starting a new program this year!  It’s called Mr. Ying’s story time (working title).  Every Sunday evening at 8:00 PM (tentatively), I will read a Chinese story live broadcasted via Teams.  The pilot episode is scheduled for Sunday, 8/16/20 at 8:00 PM.  We welcome everyone to join us.  More information to come (follow us on Facebook and Twitter).  Stay tuned!

5. Over the past few weeks, a group of teachers volunteered to form MIMS virtual learning task force.  Its mission is to create standards and best practices for virtual learning in addition to creating professional development plans to train fellow teachers on how to teach effectively in a virtual learning environment.  Huge SHOUT-OUT to Ms. Gaona, Ms. Wang, Ms. Worden, Ms. Butler, Ms. Espinoza, Ms. Qiu, Ms. Guo, Ms. Dykstra, Ms. Marcus, Ms. T. Liu, Mr. Silveira, Mr. Mouton, Ms. Yin, Ms. Muralee, Ms. Kirk, and Ms. Obando.  Thank you ALL for your time and continuous effort in making our team better every day.

6. Last but not least, please see the attached for

• MIMS Student and Parent Handbook 2020-2021 Abreviated Edition

• MIMS 2020 Virtual Master Schedule

• Please note that our reopening plan has been completed and submitted to the West Area Office for approval.  Once approved, we will share that with you also.

4th grade parents,

The current master schedule indicates a 3-way rotation because our staffing was determined by the enrollment projection which took place in the Spring. Since then, we have recruited more students than originally projected in the Spring. We remain optimistically hopeful that our latest enrollment will allow us to hire one additional 4th grade Mandarin teacher; however, please note that this is not confirmed until our virtual instruction begins this Fall. We have already interviewed and found a suitable candidate for this position should we get the approval from the West Area Office. What we need is your continued support and patience as the process takes time. Thank you again for your support and partnership.

Chung Ying, Principal
