Weekly Updates - October 15th, 2021

Dear Parents, I hope you all had a great week. Please see below for this week’s announcements.

1. Chinese High Frequency Word Test We are testing Chinese High Frequency Words (CHFW). If your child has not been tested, please continue to practice CHFW with your child on a daily basis. It is extremely important that your child masters all CHFW because your child’s ability to read Mandarin Chinese entirely depends on his/her ability to recognize these words.

2. Data night We are finalizing our plans for the data night. The teachers are voting to decide if we offer data night in a recording or live. We should have the results by the end of this week. Once we have determined the format, we will prepare the data night presentation and set a date(s). If we were to present in a pre-recorded video, we will release the video in the first week of November. If we were to present live on Teams, each grade level will present their information one day in the first week of November. We will provide you with more updates next week.

3. 5th grade tour information, We are super excited about the upcoming 5th grade tour. All 5th graders will take the MIMS middle school tour next Tuesday, from 8:30 to 10:00. We have prepared 5 stations in the gym ready to share all aspects of middle school life with the 5th graders. For parents, I am hosting virtual Q&A for all 5th grade parents. Please join me next Tuesday, 10/19/21 at 5:00 (meeting access). Come join me and learn all about the top 2 middle school in HISD! The purpose of this tour and our ambitious goal is to retain all 5th grade students in MIMS. Special thank you to all teachers, staff, parents, and student volunteers to make this tour possible.

4. Shorts and skirts We have a relaxed dress code this year due to the COVID pandemic. Our intention is not to add on more financial burden to the families. However, we discourage students wearing shorts and skirts that are inappropriately short. Please help us by monitoring your child’s outfit and make sure the length of their shorts and/or skirts are school appropriate.

5. Glass containers This is a safety concern. We strongly discourage your child using glass containers in school. Please do not use glass containers for food or water. We have had 5 incidents just this week where glass containers were dropped on the floor and broke into pieces. This creates an unsafe environment for your child and other students.

6. Website cleanup We are soliciting everyone’s help with MIMS school website cleanup. Please go to houstonisd.org/mims and look for outdated information/page(s). Please screenshot the outdated information/page(s) and email Mr. Milla (Elmer.Milla@houstonisd.org) and Ms. Obando (Linzhe.Obando@houstonisd.org).

7. Assign seats Parents, please help us by talking to your child about staying in the seat that they are assigned. Students have assigned seats for all classrooms, including the cafeteria. We rely on seating charts for contact tracing purposes. Let’s all do our part to keep everyone safe and healthy in the building.

8. Arrival/dismissal Pro tip – drop off your child between 8:05 to 8:20, when the traffic is light. Huge shoutout to the teachers and staff who do outside morning duty, the traffic is flowing smoothly in the morning. Please only cross in the crossing section right in front of the building. Do not cross in the driveway.
