HISD has received a $192,000 grant from the Harris County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to purchase two new clean air buses. SWCD Chairman Jim Meley, Board Member R.D. Burnside, and District Administrator Cathy Rogers-McCoy presented the check to purchase the buses at the HISD Board of Education meeting on Thursday, April 12.
"We are delighted that the SWCD has chosen to donate these funds for clean air buses to HISD. Our schools are committed to going green, and we appreciate all the help we get from Houston's environmental organizations," said Nathan Graf, General Manager of Transportation.
Propane is a more cost-effective fuel than regular gasoline, and buses fueled by propane require less engine maintenance and emit fewer pollutants into the air.
In October 2011, HISD's transportation fleet was listed as the top green fleet among school districts and one of the top 40 Green Fleets by Government Fleet, a leading transportation industry magazine.
