Students Invited to Edit and Shape Houston Author’s Latest Novel
July 18, 2012
Noted children’s author and former Houston First Lady Andrea White has just completed the second novel in her science fiction trilogy called the Upcity Chronicles. However, she knows she has made mistakes and is inviting HISD students to offer some constructive criticism.
“I have posted an e-book draft of my new book, Time Angel, but I know I have made mistakes and I need to tell the story better,” said White. “I want students to go online and offer their corrections, their suggestions, and their ideas.”
White is giving students until early December to edit the draft. She’s also hoping teachers will use the opportunity as a teaching tool in their classroom. HISD students and teachers can request to talk one-on-one with White as part her involvement in the Virtual Interaction with Visiting Authors or VIVA program. Last year, White talked via Skype with students and teachers at several HISD schools about her the first book in the trilogy, Windows on the World.
“They had all kinds of great suggestions that were really interesting,” said White. “I don’t want to miss out on them this time. I can’t wait to see what they have to say.”
White says she will take the first two months of next year to read all the student’s suggestions and will try to incorporate as many of them as she can into the novel. The first name and school name of all participating students will appear in the back of the book when it is published next spring.
