Golfcrest Students Carry Torch for Inclusion
November 30, 2012
December 3-7 marks the 12th annual Inclusive Schools Week. The week celebrates the progress schools have made to ensure a quality education for all students, including those with disabilities.
At Golfcrest Elementary, students and staff kicked off the week by holding a campus-wide Special Olympics celebration on Nov. 29. The event began with a parade, the ceremonial passing of the torch, and the singing of the national anthem. Afterwards, nearly 45 students with special needs competed in a variety of multi-sensory activities, including an obstacle course, bowling, and scooter-racing. Students from the entire school cheered their classmates on.
“We work hard at creating an inclusive environment on our campus,” said Principal Mary Cisneros. “We want to work together and support each other and events like today make us realize that we are all part of one big family.”
The theme of this year’s Inclusive Schools Week is “Social Inclusion: More than a seat in the class.” For more information about the week, visit www.inclusiveschools.org
