Board Starts New Year by Electing Officers, Reducing Carbon Footprint

In its first regular meeting of the New Year, the Houston Independent School District Board of Education elected new officers and accepted a $2.1 million in grants from the state to help improve the air quality of Houston.
Trustees unanimously elected Paula M. Harris to a one-year term as president on Thursday. Harris represents District IV, which includes much of south Houston. Harris was elected to the board in 2007. She succeeds Trustee Greg Meyers as president.
Other 2011 board officers elected Thursday are:
- First Vice President: Manuel Rodríguez Jr.
- Second Vice President: Anna Eastman
- Secretary: Carol Mims Galloway
- Assistant Secretary: Michael Lunceford
The Board started off 2011 by continuing HISD’s commitment to reduce pollution from school buses and other district vehicles. The board voted to accept $2,120,500 in state grants to help buy 25 propane-fueled school buses.
