More than 16,000 HISD teachers, principals and staff received bonuses for their efforts to help boost student achievement. $42.4 million dollars was awarded through HISD’s ASPIRE (Accelerating Student Progress Increasing Results & Expectations) program. The performance pay system is a major component of the district’s effective teacher initiative. HISD is committed to recruiting, hiring, and retaining effective teachers.
Lyons Elementary School bilingual teacher Andres Balp received the largest ASPIRE award this year, $11,330. Superintendent of Schools Terry B. Grier visited Balp in the classroom on January 26 to recognize the work he is doing to help students make academic progress. “In order to reach our goal of being the best school district in the country, we must make sure that we have effective teachers like Andres Balp in every classroom,” said Dr. Grier.
The superintendent also met with Lyons science teacher Sarah Izquierdo and Principal Cecilia Gonzales, who also received awards. This year 92 percent of eligible HISD employees received performance bonuses. “I want to give them all my heartfelt thanks for a job well done,” added Dr. Grier.
