Budget Cuts Approved to Offset State Shortfall
Schools must now determine how to reduce their own campus budgets

In anticipation of a dramatic drop in state funding next school year, the HISD Board of Education approved several budget cuts on March 10 that will affect the funding each HISD school receives.
As a result of the cuts, individual schools will now have to determine how to reduce their own campus budgets, which includes the possibility of teacher and support staff layoffs as well as cuts to supplies, equipment, non-core subject areas, and special programs.

As a result of the cuts, individual schools will now have to determine how to reduce their own campus budgets, which includes the possibility of teacher and support staff layoffs as well as cuts to supplies, equipment, non-core subject areas, and special programs.
The school budget cuts come after HISD administration identified about $45.8 million in recommended non-classroom cuts. Even with the cuts approved at Thursday’s board meeting and with the proposed districtwide and central office reductions, HISD still faces a funding gap of $64.8 million.
