Fine Art Programs on Display at HISD
Students showcase their talent during Fine Arts Fridays
December 12, 2011
The Houston Independent School District is brimming with students who excel in fine arts.
And every Friday this school year, employees and visitors who come to the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center cafeteria for lunch can enjoy performances from HISD student dancers, singers, artists, and musicians. The performances are part of Fine Arts Fridays, which spotlight the creative talents of students in the district's performing arts programs. See a schedule of all performances here (.pdf).
HISD is still working to make sure every student has access to high-quality fine art classes. While that mission continues, there are a number of schools that are already transforming HISD students into the talented musicians, artists and performers of tomorrow.
“It is so important for schools to offer young people the opportunity to be well-rounded,” said HISD Superintendent Terry Grier. “The arts offer one more way for our schools to engage all students.”
Because HISD is a district of choice, parents can choose from a number of HISD schools that focus on fine arts. Along with traditional academic instruction, students enrolled in these fine art programs pursue artistic endeavors, including strings, band, piano, art, dance, and creative writing.
The district is always looking for ways to showcase its talented student body. Besides offering Fine Arts Fridays, the walls of the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center are lined with student’s visual art projects. Numerous art contests also take place throughout the year, including the annual holiday card contest, which highlights the artwork of HISD students.
