Video: Superintendent House discusses
HISD's strategic plan

Today, I shared with the Board of Trustees the Six Foundational Commitments HISD is making to the Houston community as part of our strategic plan, and I am beyond excited to share those details with you.

Thousands of you have shared your hopes, fears, and aspirations for our students, our schools, and our district. You were candid in your input, and your insights have paved the way for the road ahead in HISD.

For the first time in many years, HISD has much more to offer you moving forward. The details can be found in the video above, but I wanted to emphasize a few of the strategic commitments with you directly:

  • We will work to rebuild trust with families, HISD staff, and the community.
  • We will create a baseline of expectations for student experiences by defining and funding essential positions/functions that guarantee a basic standard for student health, safety, and well-being at every campus. All schools will have counselors, social workers, librarians or media specialists, nurses, fine arts, co-curricular activities, and athletics.
  • We will provide every family with a consistently high-quality school in their neighborhood, and we will create an equitable and more accessible process for enrolling in our magnet and specialty schools.
  • We will provide consistent teaching and learning to students from pre-K to graduation, including a new, high-quality reading and math curriculum, 22 new pre-K classrooms in the first year alone, and expanded AP and other advanced coursework options.
  • We will implement high-quality systems and services that will increase achievement for students with specialized needs, including students with disabilities.

You will be hearing much more about this strategic plan in the days, weeks, and months ahead. But our work to transform this district begins now. It won't be easy, but nothing worth doing ever is.

Thank you for your partnership and commitment to HISD.

I can't wait for the road ahead – let's get to work!
