Teachers are at the heart of HISD’s upcoming compensation plan that aims for higher raises

The HISD Board of Education is getting ready to vote on the 2022-2023 budget in June. From now until then, we will be highlighting several key aspects of how these important financial decisions will impact your school community.

Teachers are the heart and soul of HISD. We must take care of them so they can take care of our students.

One of the main commitments in the district's new strategic plan is to cultivate world-class talent at all levels. HISD is making it a top priority to recruit, develop, and retain effective and dedicated teachers—starting with a revamp to the compensation plan. There's been a lot of discussion about teacher raises and incentives, but we want you to hear from teachers themselves.

With that in mind, HISD's budget proposal will ensure teachers are compensated fairly and in turn give every student access to great schools that meet all of their needs, all of the time. With this common goal, we are making decisions to fund the future of HISD.

Budget Myth Busters

MYTH: An audit identified a $300 million dollar surplus available to be used by the district.

FACT: An external review ordered by Superintendent House identified no new funds, but underscored the need to revisit past budgeting practices. The external review identified annual surpluses over the past five years with almost half being from unexpected one-time Hurricane Harvey funds from the state. That led to the growth of the district's fund balance over the five year period. The majority of unassigned – or available – fund balance will be spent on increasing teacher and employee pay, as well as addressing the district's structural deficit in the coming fiscal years.
