What is a magnet school/program?
Many of the schools offer magnet programming focused on providing innovative experiences and real-life preparation for all students. If a student is offered a magnet school seat, they will be eligible for free transportation. HISD has 119 schools that offer magnet programming to ensure families have many different options available to them. Magnet programs will be identified in each of the sections below.

Career and Technical Education
Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provide courses in a diverse set of career concentrations to prepare students for further education and careers in current or emerging professions. All CTE programs prepare students to receive industry certifications before or after they graduate. Some programs also offer dual credit courses which provide a chance for students to earn college credit while in high school. Parents can apply to a CTE program at any high school using the school choice application if that program is not offered at their zoned school. CTE high schools may have an academic matrix score requirement for entry.

Vanguard (Gifted & Talented)
Vanguard programs serve students who have been identified as gifted and/or talented in intellectual ability or creativity. A student qualifies as gifted and talented based on the results of a Gifted and Talented test, student grades, teacher recommendation and other qualifiers. Students must qualify in both reading and math on the Gifted and Talented test to qualify for a Vanguard program. Vanguard campuses offer accelerated learning to challenge students beyond their grade level. For example, at Carnegie Vanguard, the district's only Vanguard high school, students must take pre-AP and AP courses in all four core areas plus a foreign language each year.
