Olivia Casares has been selected as the new principal for Lyons Elementary School. Casares is a veteran educator with 23 years of experience. Prior to joining HISD, she began her career as a bilingual elementary teacher in the Point Isabel School District. She later took on the same role at Love Elementary School in HISD. She joined the Lyons staff in 1999 and in 2005 was named the North District Bilingual Teacher of the Year. For the last seven years, she has served in the role of Assistant Principal at Lyons. Casares earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Texas-Brownsville and a Masters in Educational Administration from Concordia University.

The Houston Health Department (HHD) will work with Houston Independent School District (HISD) to help parents and students gain access to care by assisting families with enrollment in Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicaid, SNAP Food Benefits, Gold Card, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and other avenues.
EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 1, 2019: Due to safety concerns and to maximize instructional time, Lyons Elementary will only allow students to share NONEDIBLE birthday treats with peers at the end of the school day. If parents would like to provide treats to classmates in honor of their child’s birthday, treats must be nonedible (no food – no cakes, cupcakes, candy, gum, etc.). Examples of nonedible treats consist of pencils, colors, coloring books or goodie bags with small trinkets such as plastic rings and stickers. The treats can be sent with the student upon arrival to school and will be distributed at the end of the school day before dismissal.
EFECTIVO 1 DE OCTUBRE de 2019: Debido a preocupaciones sobre seguridad y para maximizar el tiempo de instrucción, Lyons Elementary solo permitirá a los estudiantes compartir detalles de cumpleaños NO COMESTIBLES con sus compañeros al final del día escolar. Si los padres desean compartir con los compañeros de clase en honor al cumpleaños de su hijo, los detalles deben ser no comestibles (no comida – no pasteles, pastelitos, dulces, goma de mascar, etc.). Ejemplos de detalles no comestibles son lápices, colores, libros para colorear o bolsas de detalles con pequeñas baratijas como anillos de plástico y calcomanias. Los detalles pueden enviarse con el estudiante en la mañana se distribuirán al final del día escolar antes de la salida.
