  • The Multilingual Programs Department invites all parents of English Learners to our annual Parent Leadership Conference.  Parents will receive valuable information and the tools to better support their children. The conference will be held on Saturday, October 24th from 9am to 12:15pm.

    The current circumstances of this school year require a different approach when supporting our families. The focus for this year’s parent leadership conference is how to nurture the parent-child and school-home relationships in general.

    The 2020 Parent Leadership Conference will feature recognized speakers who will inform and inspire parents of English Learners to become advocates for their children’s education. Multilingual will provide experts for families of English Learners that include—Valentina Gonzalez, a highly renowned educational consultant with Seidlitz Education, Debra Paz, one of the most notable members of the Rice University School of Literacy & Culture Office, and Claudia Rodriguez, recognized presenter for Teacher Created Materials.

    HISD Reconnect Safely, Return Strong

    September 8, 2020: First day of school (all students virtual)

    October 19, 2020: Face-to-face instruction begins*

    September 8, 2020 - January 29, 2021: First semester of virtual learning for students/parents who choose online instruction.

     *Parents will have the option to choose online instruction for the fall semester (through January 29) or entire school year (through June 11). *

  • Beatrice Akala

    Sutton Elementary School Principal, Beatrice Akala

    Beatrice Akala has been selected as principal of Sutton Elementary School July 2019. She began her career in Education as an English teacher in Kenya before moving to the United States. In the U.S., she started her career as a prekindergarten through fourth-grade teacher in private school. For the last fourteen years, she has served at HISD in various capacities, including as an ESL teacher at Sam Houston High School, teacher development specialist, assistant principal, and dean of instruction at Wisdom High School. As a member of the instructional leadership team at Wisdom, the school earned four distinctions in ELA, math, science and social studies. She holds a bachelor’s in Education from Moi University Kenya, a master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston, a master’s in Human Resource Management from Walden University. She is also currently working on a doctorate’s in Education at North Central University.
