WIND INSTRUMENT AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Length of audition: 5 to 8 minutes
What to bring: Instrument in good working order; one copy of prepared music for the audition panelWhat to expect: Applicants will be asked to do the following:
1. Perform major scales from memory. Scales will be selected by the panel from the keys:Flute: C Major, B flat Major, G Major, F MajorClarinet: C Major, B flat Major, G Major, F MajorSaxophone: G Major, A Major, D Major, E MajorTrumpet: B flat Major, C Major, D Major, A MajorTrombone/Tuba: B flat Major, C Major, D Major, E flat MajorHorn: C Major, G Major, F Major, B flat MajorFor a copy of the scales, visit the Resource page.Keys specified are as written for your instrument, not the sounding pitch. You should perform one octave. Knowledge of minor scales and/or modes is not required, but may enhance your audition.
2. Perform a prepared excerpt from a solo that is listed at the end of the Essential Elements 2000 book, something similar in difficulty or from the All-City Band audition music. It is strongly suggested you consult your band director or private instructor concerning choice of excerpt. Piano accompaniment is not permitted.
3. Sightread a brief excerpt to demonstrate reading ability.
4. Answer questions regarding your musical experience and interests.
