• Our Language Policy: Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol for All Students

At Northline, we honor our families' various cultural backgrounds, and offer instruction in both English and Spanish, our objective being fluent students in both English and Spanish, if that is the language spoken at home.  All students receive Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol in their classroom during English language instruction. We embrace and encourage the use of HISD's Literacy Routines, as found here.

Why Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol for Native English speakers? The data shows these techniques benefit all English learners, whether in homes that speak only English, only Spanish, or a mixture of the two!

This benefits both native and non-native English Language Learners, incorporating visuals to better conceptualize vocabulary, sentence stems to express their thinking in a clear and organized manner, structured Turn and Talks to practice listening and oral fluency, and opportunities to write to express themselves and demonstrate their comprehension.
