C. Martinez's Dual Language Program is a Bilingual Program model whereby an equal combination of English Language Learners (ELL) and fluent English speaking students are taught together to develop full bilingualism and bi-literacy for both groups. The program is designed to teach children a second language in a natural way through subject content instruction and every day classroom conversation.
All participating students receive instruction in language arts and content subjects primarily in Spanish in the early grades (K-3), and gradually increase their English instruction until reaching a level of proficiency in both languages that leads to a 50% Spanish/ 50% English curriculum in grades 4-5.
Dual Language students at Clemente Martinez will develop fluency and literacy in Spanish and English, achieve proficiency in all academic subjects, meeting or exceeding district guidelines, and acquire an understanding and appreciation of other cultures.
Each classroom is guided by a teacher who holds bilingual certification. Content instruction is presented through integrated thematic units. Other teaching techniques include cooperative learning, natural approach to second language acquisition, sheltered instruction, and activity-based small group instruction.
Parent involvement is an integral part of the program. Parents are considered their child's first teacher and are encouraged to become actively involved in their child's education. Parents are invited to volunteer in the immersion classrooms. It is essential that language development be supported through family activities at home.
Interested parents are encouraged to visit the school and discuss the program.
