Principal Shanda N. Walker is a 24-year dedicated member of TEAMHISD. She began her teaching career in 2000 at Lucille Gregg Elementary, where she served the community for 14 years. While there, she served as a Grade Level Chairperson, Lead Content Teacher (RLA), G/T Coordinator, Title I Coordinator, IAT/RTI Liaison, and Teacher Coach. In 2014, she was promoted to Assistant Principal at J. R. Reynolds Elementary. She served in this capacity for the Reynolds community for 4 years. In 2019, Principal Walker was promoted to the principalship at Anna B. Kelso Elementary and has committed herself to increasing student achievement and closing the achievement gap of the scholars who attend "The Jewel of South Park". Her mission and goal is to expose the scholars of Kelso Elementary to the world around them and the world that surrounds them. Principal Walker's core educational beliefs are:
1. All scholars can learn if we teach them the way they learn best!
2. "Exposure" to the world is the great equalizer that connects our urban schools systems to our suburban counterparts. If we expose our scholars and challenge their potential, there is nothing they can not accomplish. The world is theirs for the taking!!!!
When asked what drives her to do what she does on a daily basis, Principal Walker says, "The smiles of the scholars when the lightbulb comes on and they get "IT", whatever "IT" is for the day! That feeling is priceless and it is what I strive to see every day."
Principal Walker is a wife (25 years), a mother of two daughters, a life-long learner and a teacher forever. She loves to sing, serves her community through numerous community service organizations, and the peacock is her spiritual animal.
