Some HISD secondary programs use a matrix to qualify students. The matrix uses two formulas to determine if a student is qualified to apply to these programs.
- Formula 1 - Uses the student’s previous year STAAR scores combined with end-of-year grades, or core average, to calculate a combined matrix score.
- Formula 2 - Uses the most recent end-of-year grades ONLY to calculate a core average matrix score.
Only the highest matrix score will be used for your child's application.
If your student does qualify, they’ll be entered into a lottery that determines who will be offered a seat in the secondary program.
Please reference the documents on this page to determine if your chosen program requires matrix qualification. If you have any questions, please contact us.
