In 2015, Briarmeadow became an authorized International Baccalaureate school in the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Our goal is for our students to be immersed in a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners. The PYP is a framework for all of our elementary instruction. Instruction revolves around 6 Transdisciplinary Themes:
- Who We Are
- Where We Are in Place & Time
- How We Express Ourselves
- How the World Works
- How We Organize Ourselves
- Sharing the Planet
Our Programme of Inquiry (POI) can be found to the right. Students work across discipline areas to create conceptual understanding and kowledge. In math, we try to align to the POI through concepts. For example, a unit of inquiry may be about systems and we incorporate the place value system. Perhaps the inquiry is about change, so the students will explore missing addends. During these times, we primarily use Investigations as a resource since it is constructivist in nature. In other ways, mathematics is incorporated in the unit. For example, when working on a unit that requires examining data, they will explore the math data standards at that time.
