Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan MS is a unique Biomedical Magnet School that offers a rigorous health science-based curriculum to students. With project-based and hands-on learning, high school credits in 7th and 8th grade, and exposure to pathways in biomedical science, our students have the opportunities to become college and career-ready at an early age. Every class taught at Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D Ryan MS is Advanced. We provide a unique and accelerated curriculum and real-world experiences in science and health, with the goal of preparing our students for success at DeBakey High School for Health Professions, or any other rigorous and prestigious high school.
It is highly recommended that you apply during Phase 1, as Phase 2 applicants are considered on a space-available basis.Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan is open to all students residing within HISD. Transportation will be provided for students who have qualifications and reside within HISD.

What is the application timeline?
Posted by:Phase 1 will be open from December 14th, 2022 to February 2nd, 2023.
New this year: Once all in-district applicants have been accommodated, out-of-district applicants will be included in the Phase 1 lottery.
Families will learn lottery results the week of April 5th, 2023.
Phase 2 will be open April 5th, 2023 to June 15th, 2023.
All families may apply for available seats through June 15th, 2023.
Families new to HISD may apply for available seats in early August.

- Families with a child in a transitional grade

- Families that have moved away from their formerly zoned HISD school
- Out-of-district families seeking to attend a HISD school in the 23-24 school year

Who Does Not Need To Apply In December?
Posted by:If your child is currently enrolled in an HISD school in a non-transitional grade, and you would like them to continue at that school for the 23-24 school year, you do not need to submit an application.

Do you accept out of district students?
Posted by:Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan accepts out of district students. Out of district students can apply during Phase 1 (December 14 to February 2).

What is boundary option?
Posted by:Students who qualify for the boundary option are zoned to Blackshear Elementary, Lockhart Elementary, and MacGregor Elementary Schools. All Boundary Option families must complete the Magnet Program application.

What score does my child need on their matrix in order to qualify for the program?
Posted by:Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan is open enrollment. Students do not need a minimum matrix score to apply.

How does ranking work?
Posted by:It is very important that you rank the schools you are applying to in the order of preference.
Once accepted into a program, all of a student’s lesser-ranked applications, including any other acceptances, will be “dropped” or “released”, so that those spots can be offered to other students. For example, if you get accepted into your #1 ranked-choice and applied to 3 programs, the #2 and #3 choice will be dropped.

Do you provide bus transportation?
Posted by:We provide bus transportation to all residents within Houston ISD. Please be sure to request bus transportation when you apply.

My student has qualified and has been offered a seat into your program. What are the next steps?
Posted by:If your child is offered a seat, you must complete the enrollment procedures.
You will have to submit a signed entrance agreement along with the Houston ISD enrollment packet. You will be emailed with specific instructions about what needs to be submitted along with all forms that are required.
