STEM Magnet Program
-
AT Lockhart, the curriculum is structured to foster critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity in students. It often incorporates real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, and math, encouraging students to apply their knowledge to solve practical problems. We offer specialized courses and programs in these disciplines and have dedicated laboratories, makerspaces, and technology centers to support hands-on learning experiences.
What sets Lockhart apart from other STEM magnet programs is our technology department and our focus on social-emotional learning. We are one of two elementary campuses with an Apple computer and a PC lab. Our students learn to use both iOS and Windows features starting in Kindergarten. All students use block-based coding software which has the 7 languages of code embedded in them (Python, Java, Javascript, C/C+, PHP, C++, SQL). We are using the same software as technology-based middle and high schools utilize. Students start to code in kindergarten and advance to making simple video games such as pong, whack a mole, tic-tac-toe, etc. We have one of two teachers certified to teach drones to our students, in addition to engineering, coding, and robotics.
Our campus also invests heavily in our social-emotional program through a house system that helps build and improve the culture and climate at Lockhart. Teachers and staff follow the CHAMPS system and we have been designated a No Place for Hate campus for the 2022-2023 school year. In addition to the technological changes in the world, we understand that the classroom also needs to adjust to the needs of the students. To advance with our students, we have social learning spaces on campus that help foster today's children.
Science
-
In science education, students learn about the natural world, its laws, and the scientific method. They explore various scientific disciplines, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science, to develop an understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the universe.
Technology
-
Technology education focuses on the application of scientific knowledge to design, create, and use technological solutions. Students learn about various technologies, digital tools, and systems, as well as their impact on society. They may engage in activities such as coding, programming, robotics, and computer-aided design (CAD).
Engineering
-
Engineering education involves applying scientific and mathematical principles to design and create solutions to practical problems. It emphasizes the engineering design process, which involves identifying problems, brainstorming solutions, prototyping, testing, and iterating. Students learn about different engineering fields, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering.
Mathematics
-
Mathematics education encompasses the study of numbers, quantities, patterns, and structures. Students learn mathematical concepts, algorithms, and problem-solving strategies. They explore various branches of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, calculus, probability, and statistics, to develop logical reasoning and analytical skills.
