Phillis Wheatley High School is located in an urban community in the historic 5th Ward of Houston, Texas. Wheatley has a rich history, strong legacy, and powerful alumni. The school was started in 1927. Wheatley High School has many outstanding graduates - i.e. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan; Congressman Mickey Leland; Former Ambassador to the Bahamas, Sydney Williams; County Commissioner El Franco Lee; State Representative Harold Dutton; State Representative Al Edwards.
The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC ) Program at Phillis Wheatley High School started in 1954 through 1976 as aNational Defense Cadet Corps unit. It was reactivated as a JROTC unit in 1987 and in 1994 it was reorganized as the HISD’s16th JROTC Battalion.PrincipalMr. Joseph Williams (January 2018 -Present)Joseph E. Williams Sr. is the principal of Wheatley High School. Williams previously served as principal of Key Fine Arts Academy. Before that, he served as principal of Kelso School for Social Sciences and Matthew W. Dogan Elementary, as well as assistant principal at Vera Escamilla Intermediate in Aldine ISD. Williams began his career with HISD 22 years ago as a fifth-grade teacher at Atherton Elementary. He has worked as a fellow at Harvard University and partnered with the National Center for Urban School Transformation and Building Excellent Schools.Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Texas Southern University, a teaching certificate from the University of St. Thomas, and a master of education in administration and supervision from the University of Houston.
