As the principal of Mark White Elementary, I am honored to serve our community! I have been an educator for over 20 years and have been a teacher of first, second, fourth, and fifth grades. I have also served as a math instructional specialist and assistant principal in Austin ISD. During my time in HISD, I worked at Mark Twain Elementary and as an assistant principal at the School of St. George Place where I worked as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Coordinator and led the school through IB authorization. However, my most rewarding career experience has been working as the principal of Mark White Elementary. Working with our wonderful staff, parents, and students has been a fulfilling endeavor and I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished.
During my time as an educator, I have realized the importance of educating students to be successful in the global marketplace. With that idea in mind, Mark White Elementary offers a variety of programs aimed at developing globally-minded students. Learning a second language is a huge asset for students who wish to be competitive in the global work force. At Mark White Elementary, students will have the opportunity to acquire a second language. For our PreK through 5th grade students, we offer the option of enrolling in our French Immersion Program. In addition, we offer Spanish Dual Language for PreK through Kindergarten students. All students will also have access to ESL programs, which will allow students to further develop English as a second language. As part of our language acquisition focus, we are committed to an exceptional literacy program in every classroom. I am most proud of the wonderful diversity on our campus. We are fortunate to work with students and families from all around the world, who speak over 30 different languages. This gives our students exposure to languages and cultures from around the world. Finally, we will offer a global education; this means that we will develop global students, who exhibit the Global Graduate Profile and embrace the diversity around them.
I look forward to seeing all of our parents and students around campus. I am committed to developing strong partnerships with our families and the community. I know that together we will continue to create a school that is not only academically successful, but warm and inviting. It is my firm belief that it is our job as educators to help students reach their maximum potential by meeting their educational, social, and emotional needs on a daily basis. I look forward to working collaboratively with our teachers, staff, and parents to accomplish success for every child.
I hope to see you at the various events that we host for families. If you should have any questions regarding our school, programs, or enrollment, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I can be reached via email at LHERNA15@houstonisd.org.
I look forward to meeting you! À bientôt!
