    HOW TO APPLY TO A MAGNET PROGRAM

    Step One

    • Review your student’s interests and needs and look for alignment with specific magnet programs
    • Use the information and links at HoustonISD.org/SchoolChoice
    • Consider how you will rank your choices
    • Visit selected programs on School Choice Thursdays

    Step Two

    • Visit www.HISDChoice.com to apply online.
    • If you have used the system before, please use your previous account.
    • Paper applications are available online, at any Magnet program, or from the Office of School Choice. (Online applications provide more options for tracking and staying up-to-date.)
    • Make sure to sign your application. 
    • Qualified applications submitted Between September 27 and Dec. 6, 2019, will be entered into any lotteries.

    Step Three

    • For elementary programs, only Vanguard applications may require documentation.
    • Please be on the lookout for emails or phone calls related to your application.

    Step Four

    • Check your SPAM folder to ensure you are not missing any information. If at all possible, do not use a Hotmail account, as the service usually blocks emails from HISD.

    Step Five

    • On March 21, 2020, notification of application status will be sent to all parents (and will be viewable online).
    • If your student has been offered a seat in a program, you have two weeks to provide proof of residence and sign an entrance agreement.
    If your student was not offered a seat on March 21, 2020, but has been placed on a waitlist, stay alert for changes in application status throughout the summer. You may be able to submit additional applications to programs with more room.

    Phase 1:
    September 28- December 7, 2018

    Where do I begin?

    1. Complete application- For best results, please use Chrome.
     
    Students may apply to 10 Magnet programs with no more than 5 Vanguard selections.
     
    HOW TO APPLY ONLINE
    1. If you had an account last year, please use it again. Create an account if you did not create one last year.
    2. Agree to Requirements & Policies
    3. Complete Student Information
    4. Complete Family Information
    5. Complete Sibling Information (if applicable)
    6. Recommendations (if applicable)
    7. Signatures
    8. Review and Send (Application will not be processed until you select "Submit my Application")
    USING A PAPER APPLICATION
    1. Obtain application at HoustonISD.org/magnet or by visiting any HISD school
    2. Complete in INK and be sure to include all requested information
    3. Submit to each school you are applying to along with any requested documents
    STEP 1: GATHER REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
    For students who are not new to HISD, there will normally be no required documents to submit. However, for students new to HISD or for those missing documents, there are several options this year for submitting documents.
     
    STEP 2: DELIVER REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (YOU HAVE SEVERAL OPTIONS)
    1. Upload required documents directly from online application system (must be legible)
    2. Mail or deliver copies of the documents to the Office of School Choice at 4400 W. 18th Street, Houston, TX 77092-8501
    3. Mail or deliver copies of the documents to each school you are applying to.
    STEP 3: MONITOR YOUR ACCOUNT AND FOLLOW UP
    Online Applications: If you have applied online, make sure to monitor your account and the email address that you provided when you created your account.
    Paper Applications: If you submitted a paper application, call the schools to which you have applied to see if there are any additional steps that are required.
     
    STEP 4: ACCEPTING A MAGNET SPACE
    If you are accepted into a program and wish to accept your offered place, at least one parent/guardian must visit the desired school and sign an entrance agreement. Parent/guardian must bring all required documents (proof of residence and proof of age if entering PK or K). NOTE: Failure to deliver all required documents by April 9, 2020or providing incorrect information will mean that you are no longer guaranteed a place at that school.

    •  A copy of this year's report card
    •  Last year's final report card
    •  A copy of the permanent transcript
    •  A copy of the standardized test scores
    •  A copy of your updated immunization record
    •  Proof of residency (utility bill or lease agreement)
