Thematic Units @HartsfieldAESKindergarten scholars will be exposed to various Life Cycles, which will be their introduction to cataloging and classifying different species.The animal science focus for first grade scholars will be Bird and Amphibians. Areas extracted from environmental science will include biology, zoology, and ecology. Scholars will be responsible for keeping a journal of their studies through photo stories, written compositions and the end of year portfolio. Their ongoing project will consist of creating and sustaining an amphibian habitat.The animal science focus for second grade scholars will be Domesticated Animals: Gnawing Animals. Areas extracted from environmental science will include biology, zoology, and ecology. Scholars will be responsible for keeping a journal of their studies through photo stories, written compositions and the end of year portfolio. Their ongoing project will consist of creating and sustaining a gnawing habitat and a campus butterfly garden.In year four of the AES program, scholars in third grade will focus primarily on environmental science. The specific focus will be Vegetation and Insects. Areas of study will include biology, geology, ecology, soil science, and atmospheric science. Additionally, third grade scholars will spearhead the GREEN Initiative on our campus, promoting the concept of reduce, reuse, recycle. They will be responsible for gardening calendars, a planting and harvesting photo story and an end of year portfolio. Their ongoing projects will consist of the campus community garden and the community harvest festival. The projects developed in third grade will be used for community outreach.The animal science focus for fourth grade will be Domesticated Animals: Large Breeds. Areas extracted from environmental science will include biology, human geography, and ecology. Scholars will be responsible for chronicling their experiences through narrative and expository compositions and end of the year portfolios. Through an initiative to rescue stray animals, the scholars will create awareness literature for distribution throughout the community, volunteer time at local animal shelters, and track their animal rescue efforts through charts, graphs, and photo stories. The goal of this initiative is to keep animals from being neglected, abused, and to address overpopulation of stray animals in the community.The animal science focus for fifth grade scholars will be Livestock and Veterinary Science. Areas extracted from environmental science will include biology, ecology, zoology, and soil science. Scholars will be responsible for committing to the 4-H club, care for the campus livestock, livestock journals, and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) photo presentations. The scholars' two culminating projects will consist of the Sheep Shearing Festival and the presentations of their AES 5 year Program Portfolio. Scholars who have not completed five years in the AES program will be responsible for a composite portfolio reflecting their AES experiences.
