Ms. Deirdre Ricketts

Hello Stallions! My name is Deirdre Ricketts and I am part of Dream STEAM Team at Lulu M. Stevens Elementary School where I have taught going on 23 years. I am thrilled to teach in our Science Lab, the BEST classroom at the school. I work with all age groups and grade levels, Pre-K- Fifth grade. I love Science and exploring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math). Not only do I have the best room in the school, but I have the Best job on campus, but don’t tell anyone.  I am excited to work with you and get to know each and every one of you better. Scroll down to learn a little bit more about me.

My Background and Education

I was born in New York City to parents of Caribbean heritage. My sister Tiffany, also a teacher, and I grew up here in Houston, Texas. While we graduated from the same high school, Jersey Village H.S., I went to The University of Texas in Austin, while she went to Texas A&M.

My Interests/Hobbies

I'm a self-proclaimed MUA, makeup artist. I love to watch YouTube tutorials, try new looks, and purchase the latest products. When I'm not having fun with cosmetics, I like to a read books and articles, go to aqua fitness class, and create art.

 Fun Facts

I love all things WWII.  In fact my personal library is filled with books and DVD’s on the European Theater of the war. If there is a new movie out that references the topic, I’m there in the theater. One of the items on my bucket list is to become a docent at Houston’s Holocaust Memorial and Museum.  I’m currently reading a book about the Lebensborn Program.

Why I became a Teacher

I have a passion for science, a passion for STEAM, a passion for education, and specifically a passion for equity in STEAM education. The future is STEAM. STEAM is where most of the sustainable jobs are at. Teaching STEAM to elementary students opens the door for them to become tomorrow's movers and shakers. Young children with a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics will go on to play an integral role in our nation's global competitiveness and economic stability----and it’s just a lot of fun!!!!
