The Stevens SPARK Park is a cooperative venture of Houston ISD and the Stevens parents and students.  The park includes recovered green space, a new sidewalk, relocated play equipment, resurfaced asphalt play area, and wooden decking under the large live oaks trees.    The park was designed by Matt Baumgarten of SWA with assistance from Nelly Fuentes.   The contractor was John Adams.  Volunteers from Total worked with Trees for Houston and planted 55 trees in the park. Another group of Total volunteers painted wooden bookends that will be displayed along the fence line as well as the poles of the basketball pavilion. Volunteers from the Leather Apron Foundation painted poles along the walkway. Art teacher Luzmarie Alvarez created a mural of school supplies, which faces the park and is featured in the 2016 SPARK art calendar.

The school contributed over $35,000 for their SPARK Park. The Stevens PTO donated over $12,000. Money was raised through donations and events such as a Father/Daughter Dance, Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by Fiesta Club Party, a student/faculty basketball game, family bingo night, and a student penny drive.  A contribution by Justin Harrod, manager of Raising Cane’s on Ella Blvd., was used to purchase three new park benches. Additional funding for the park includes $5,000 from Houston ISD, $5,000 from Commissioner Jack Cagle Harris Co. Pct. 4; $25,000 from The Brown Foundation; and $15,000 from Total. HISD employees helped tremendously in the removal of asphalt, the painting of a temporary building, and the painting of the roof of the basketball pavilion.

Alex Pollock from Boy Scout Troop 604 raised funds and led volunteers to install a rock garden that includes native Texas plants to fulfill his Eagle Scout service requirement.  Alex is a sophomore at St. Thomas High School.    Evan Gomez, also from Boy Scout Troop 604, is in the planning and fundraising stage of his Eagle Scout service project, which is for the installation of outdoor lab tables.  Evan is a senior at Waltrip High School.

To honor the occasion, State Representative Sylvester Turner will present a Texas flag that has flown over the State Capitol. Congressman Sheila Jackson Lee’s office will present a US flag that flew over the US Capitol.
