• Elective Courses Offered:

    Band
In our band program scholars learn to play, perform, and understand music. They become well-versed in many aspects of music, learning various musical instruments and exposure to arts from all around the world. Band scholars get many opportunities to perform at a variety of school and community events.

    Dance
The dance program exposes scholars to various types of dance, from ballet to hip hop. Using our newly renovated dance studio as a classroom space, dance scholars expand their cultural literacy along with their knowledge of technique. Instruction is provided by our own faculty with guest teachers from our community partner, Lineage Dance of Pasadena, two to three days a week! Eliot dancers have opportunities to perform both on and off-campus throughout the year.

    Professional Communications
The photography course is structured around projects emphasizing photographic elements. It will introduce the scholars to the principles of contemporary media as a verbal and visual means of communication in today’s society. The scholar will develop an ability to analyze and create printed and electronic media for effective visual and verbal communication using computers, and graphics programs.

    Theater Arts
Theater Arts scholars work in a variety of disciplines, including individual monologues and scenes as well as writing screenplays.

    Visual Arts
In Visual Arts, scholars are able to develop an understanding and an appreciation for the Arts as a whole, while exploring the creative process through thinking about, looking at, and creating works of visual arts.

The LMS magnet program believes through the arts we can build on a child’s academics to give scholars opportunities for creative expression. Young artists work together to produce high-quality performances, publications, and exhibitions that reflect their understanding of the arts, develop their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and enhance their self-esteem.
Research has shown that scholars who apply themselves in the arts perform higher academically, and HISD’s fine arts magnet programs provide a strong core of knowledge.
