Attendance Requirements

At HISD, missing more than 10 percent (or 17 days) of school a year can lead to a student not receiving a grade or being retained, but more importantly, it represents lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn. Students are required to attend school daily. Attendance is taken each day at 9:30 a.m.
The only absences excused are:- Death in the family;
- Personal illness; and
- Inclement weather (which would result in the closing of schools).
Each absence must be accompanied by a parent note or doctor's excuse no more than 3 days after an absence.
Please note: Frequent absences may result in an attendance referral which would constitute a visit to the home
by an attendance officer or non promotion.
