    In an effort to keep you informed about your child’s classroom activities during the first twelve weeks of school, the following is a list of concepts that will be introduced.
    • The front, back, top and bottom of a book, how to hold the book and turn the pages.
    • Follow oral directions.
    • Use the words in, on, under, over, beside, inside, behind, above and below appropriately.
    • Name letters of the alphabet.
    • Answer questions about a story.
    • Retell a story.
    • Identify the characters in a story.
    • Take turns when speaking.
    • Tell what might happen next when listening to a book.
    • Count by ones to 10.
    • Recognize and describe circles and squares.
    • Match objects that are alike.
    • Use five senses to learn about objects.
    • Observe and discuss changes in the weather.
    • Sort objects into groups by color, size, shape etc.
    • Understand the concept of today and tomorrow.
    • Follow classroom rules.
    • Describe family characteristics.
    • Describe community environment such as buildings, streets, landscape.
    Please discuss these concepts with your student and practice at home by reading at least 20 minutes each day with your child, then discuss what was read and ask them to retell the story to you. Point out how to hold the book, the front cover, the back cover etc. Help your child to recognize the letters in his name. Let your child count objects making sure that he is associating each number with an object. Point out the measuring spoons and cups and explain whey you are using them while you cook. Point out anything your child can see, touch, smell, hear or taste. When driving through the neighborhood point out buildings, name streets and notice the landscape. Talk about the weather. Let your child do puzzles. Identify objects in the environment that are shaped like a circle or a square. Ask about his/her favorite activity in school today and what might happen tomorrow.

    Read nursery rhymes and sing favorite songs.
