Aleicia Roberts: October 2012 Employee of the Month

Aleicia Roberts, Employee of the Month for October, is the college access coordinator at North Houston Early College High School (NHECHS), a position she has held for two years. She has been a member of Team HISD since 1990, when she first came to the district as a math/science teacher at Highland Heights Elementary School. Since that time, she has also served as an instructional coordinator, a math and reading coach, and a college access support staff member at a number of campuses, including E. O. Smith Education Center; Elliott, Frost, Isaac, and Oates elementary schools; and Wheatley and Yates high schools.
As the college access coordinator for NHECHS, Roberts’ primary focus is guiding twelfth-graders through their final year of high school by helping them obtain college scholarships and gain acceptance into institutes of higher learning. She also works with all students to make sure they are on the right track by confirming they are taking the appropriate courses and assisting them in completing the paperwork needed to apply for financial assistance or admission to universities. In the spring of 2012, Roberts’ efforts resulted in the school’s first senior class having the largest number of students—67—at any HISD campus to earn an associate’s degree along with a high school diploma. She also serves as her school’s AP/SAT/PSAT/GT testing coordinator, a member of the Parent Teacher Organization, and a sponsor of the National Honor Society, Yearbook Committee, and senior class. She has been nominated twice for HISD Teacher of the Year honors: once while at Highland Heights and once while at Oates.
A native Houstonian, Roberts is a product of Atherton Elementary School. She lives in Houston with her husband of six years, Larry Caulfield, and when not working, she enjoys watching movies, playing softball, traveling to new places, and supporting church youth groups.
"Mrs. Roberts is a wife, mother, and grandmother, yet she spends the lion’s share of her time and energy meeting the educational needs of our students. Even after she broke her ankle during a carwash fundraiser, she never missed a day of work. We often saw her zipping around campus in her ‘boot,’ taking care of business. She even went on a college visit—boot and all—because she didn’t want to reschedule it."

"Mrs. Roberts is a fabulous worker. She gets her kids tons of scholarships, and the majority graduated with their associates’ degrees this year, due in large part to her. She’s empowering entire communities, all while working out of a portable building."
