Leonor Corona: January 2013 Employee of the Month

Leonor Corona is Employee of the Month for January.
Leonor Corona, Employee of the Month for January, is the secretary at Stevens Elementary School, a position she has held for the past six years. She originally came to the district in 2001 as a parent tutor at Sherman Elementary School, but has also served as a teacher’s aide or a secretary at Burbank Elementary, Pugh Elementary, and the HISD Transportation Services Department.

As the secretary at Stevens Elementary, Corona is responsible for ordering supplies, monitoring the school’s activity fund, processing payroll, and managing the budget. She also acts as the school’s unofficial interpreter for Spanish-speaking visitors, and she is a member of the Shared Decision-Making Committee. In addition, Corona volunteers at the school during Saturday tutorials, assists the Parent Teacher Association, serves as a cafeteria monitor, and helps teachers set up their classrooms at the beginning of each year.

Originally from Mexico City, Corona moved to the United States with her family when she was seven. She attended Lamar Elementary and Marshall Middle Schools, and is a proud member of the Davis High School’s Class of 1982. When not working, Corona enjoys dancing, watching television shows, and spending time with her three adult children, all of whom are graduates of HISD.

“Ms. Corona is very good at her job,” says Stevens ES Principal Lucy Anderson. “She is funny, intelligent, and irreverent, and she keeps the staff on its toes. She handles the budget, payroll, and ‘extra duties as assigned’ with grace, but still has time to make us all laugh, too.”

“Ms. Corona has an excellent rapport with the students, staff, and parents,” says Stevens ES Assistant Principal Bernadette Williams. “When the children bring the attendance folders to the office, they never leave without going over to her desk first to greet her with a smile. She is such a joy to have on staff.”

“Ms. Corona is serious about education, but she keeps it light around the office,” adds data entry clerk Regina Long. “If you come in feeling down, she makes you laugh, but she also does her work and is very attentive to the children. She is one of a kind.”
