Known as “The First Lady of Mading Elementary,” Teaching
Assistant Laura Smith is HISD’s June Employee of the Month. 
Having started with HISD over 30 years ago as a volunteer, Smith has witnessed several generations walk the campus.
“She goes above and beyond to get things done on our campus,” Principal Nicole Renee Haskins said. “There isn’t a stranger that doesn’t know Smith when they visit Mading Elementary.”
“What keeps me motivated is watching the students realize that they are capable of learning,” Smith said. “It’s an amazing feeling to watch their eyes light up once they learn something new.”
