    The HISD Alternative Certification Program is a one-year program dedicated to recruiting individuals from diverse educational and career backgrounds who are passionate about students, teaching, and learning.

  • What is the total cost of the program?

    The total cost of the HISD/ACP is $5,035.00.  $635.00 (non-refundable) is for Pre-Service and the remaining $4,400.00 will be deducted over 20 pay-periods from your paycheck.

  • What is Summer Pre-Service?

    Pre-service is the coursework during the summer before entering into the classroom. 

  • What are the core content areas that HISD-ACP certify in?

    We certify in:

    • Core Subjects EC-6

    • Core Subjects 4-8

    • Bilingual Core Subjects EC-6

    • Languages Other Than English (LOTE-Spanish)

    • ELAR 4-8

    • ELAR/Social Studies 4-8

    • ELAR 7-12 (content has written components, and are not offered as frequently as other content exams, registration is limited)

    • History 7-12

    • Math 4-8

    • Math 7-12

    • Math/Science 4-8

    • Science 4-8

    • Life Science 7-12

    • Science 7-12

    • Social Studies 4-8

    • Social Studies 7-12

    • SPED Core Subjects EC-6

    • SPED Core Subjects 4-8

    • ESL Supplemental (Not Required but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for Core Subjects and ELAR)

  • Does HISD-ACP Sponsor Visa work permits?


  • Is the coursework face to face or virtual?

    Your coursework maybe both.

  • What are the entrance requirements?

    You are required to have a conferred four- year degree (bachelor’s degree) with at least a 2.5 GPA and a passing TX PACT exam score.

  • How long does it take to review my application?

    A maximum of a 5 - 7 business days. 

  • What is the timeline for the application window?

    September 14 – April 1, 2022 for application submissions. 



  • When must the TX PACT EXAM be taken and passed? 

    The TX PACT must be taken and passed by April 8, 2022.

  • Can I get certified in more than one teaching field?

    No, during the first year of teaching, you will only be certified in one core content area.  After you receive your initial certification you may add additional certifications.

  • Am I required to attend all Pre-Service classes?

    Yes, (whether they are virtual or in person)

  • What are the required hours of Pre-Service coursework for the Summer? 

    * You must complete 150 coursework hours.

    * Also you must complete 30 observations hours.
