Meeting Minutes:
Our SDMC meeting began at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.
Campus Safety – Monthly Fire Drills, Intruder and Shelter-in-Place Drills are up to date and will continue each month in accordance with HISD guidelines. Teachers and Staff demonstrate teamwork as they supervise students during morning arrivals and afternoon dismissals. Teams are vigilant in the hallways during transitions.
School Improvement Plan (SIP) – In June, we will conduct our Final Summative Review of the SIP. We held Quarterly Reviews in March, January, and November. These formative reviews are in place to ensure that our SIP goals are being met. We provide evidence and rate 54 measurable objectives for Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
Budget – We have projected student enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year to be 1,080 students. Our elementary classes will have a 22:1 ratio for Grades K-4. Grade 5 will reflect a 25:1 ratio. Middle School Grades 6-8 will reflect a 26:1 ratio. This projected enrollment directly impacts our annual budget.
Curriculum – We continue with House Bill 4545 accelerated instruction for Grades 4-8. A few students need to complete their 30 hours for reading and 30 hours for math. These sessions with teachers and students have been coordinated by our administrators, Ms. Callegari and Ms. Gilbert. They conference with parents and document each student who qualifies and attends these sessions for HB4545. Tutorials are held before school, afterschool, and on Saturdays.
SDMC Elections – There will be three positions open. The SDMC Election will be held Friday, June 3, 2022. Members of the teaching staff will vote by secret ballot.
Last Day of School for Students – Tuesday, June 7, 2022. Teachers will close out paperwork and classrooms as their last day is Wednesday.
Other business – Summer School begins Monday, June 13, 2022, and runs through July 7, 2022, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. Our Kindergarten Bilingual students will begin Thursday, June 9, 2022. Summer School students will be provided opportunities for ancillary classes such as Physical Education, Art, and Music. There will be enrichment classes in addition to regular Summer School classes.
Rice School Uniforms – There will be no hoodies allowed in the classrooms next school year. The traditional red, blue, and white Rice School shirts will be worn with khaki pants.
This was the last SDMC meeting for the 2021-2022 school year.

Meeting Minutes:
Our SDMC meeting began at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
Campus Safety – As a result of Covid, we reviewed the safety procedures which teachers and staff must follow. They must use the CheckIn2Work app, wear a mask, wash hands often, and social distance. Our teachers have PPE supplies (masks, gloves, wipes) in their classrooms. We ask teachers to remind their students to wear their mask, wash hands, and social distance in the classroom and hallways. Monthly Fire Drills, Intruder, and Shelter-in-place drills are ongoing.
Budget - Principal Hobbs informed the SDMC that the school will return money to HISD due to the October snapshot enrollment numbers. We were 86 students short of the 1162 student projection. We had 1076 students in Grades K-8 on snapshot date. This lower enrollment number was the result of COVID’s impact on families. Several parents chose to homeschool while others moved due to new jobs. Funding will be deducted from our school budget. In addition to enrollment, we need to keep a close watch on attendance as it is a major factor in the calculation of funding for our school.
School Improvement Plan Review – Quarterly reviews will be held (November, January, March, June) to determine if SIP goals are being met. The SDMC reviewed and was in agreement to continue to modify strategies as needed for Reading, Writing, Math, and Science for STAAR testing grades.
Curriculum – HB4545 impacts Grades 4-8 on our campus. Some students need 30 hours of accelerated instruction. We are on target with providing students with the necessary hours. Camp Spark will be held December 20-21, 2021, for students who need additional support as we close the gaps on learning. Our teachers are giving students the District Level Assessments (DLA) for Grades 1-8 in Reading, Math, Writing, Science.
Hour of Code – HISD visitors from the Academic Technology Department came out to observe Rice School students joining millions of other students across the world in the Hour of Code. Students from Ms. Lewis’ and Ms. Rios’ classes used programming tools to create computer games, applications, and web content. There were plugged and unplugged activities during this coding event. Special thanks to both teachers!
Rice School Luncheon – Our teachers and staff will be provided a holiday luncheon on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. Due to Covid, individual box lunches and drinks will be available for staff to pick up from the front office area during their scheduled lunch break.
Other Business – (1.) Teacher retention bonus to be paid December 22, 2021, and the other half in June. (2.) SDMC meetings are scheduled quarterly according to Board Policy, and they are as follows: September 22 (Q1); December 14 (Q2); February 16 (Q3); and May 11, 2022 (Q4).
