Meeting Minutes:
Our SDMC meeting began at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Teacher Excellence System (TES) – An overview of HISD’s proposed teacher evaluation system was presented by Principal Hobbs and Teacher Chasity McFarland, TES representative for the Rice School. Beginning the School Year 2025-2026, we will use HISD’s own Teacher Excellence System pending board approval. Components of the TES system were discussed and the PowerPoint video shared with the SDMC. Two distinct processes, Evaluation and Compensation, are reflected in this system. There is one evaluation system (TES) which applies to all teachers (NES and PUA). There will be two compensation plans, Hospital Model Incentive Pay (NES) and Pay-for-Performance (PUA). Teachers will provide feedback via educator town halls, webinars, and more.
School Safety – Monthly Fire Drills, Intruder and Shelter-in-Place Drills are current. We will continue each month in accordance with HISD and State guidelines. Morning and Afternoon supervision by teachers and staff demonstrate excellent teamwork to keep students safe. Locked Doors both exterior and classroom are continuously monitored by Campus Officer and Administrative Staff.
Budget – Projections for student enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year will be made next month. The Rice School is a highly sought after Magnet School. Daily attendance (ADA) impacts funding to the school’s budget.
Curriculum – Rice K-8 continues to implement the district’s curriculum. Interim assessments provide us with data to determine which students are on target for passing grade level standards this school year. House Bill 1416 tutorials are ongoing for Grades 4-8. Parent conferences are held and documented for each student who qualifies for HB1416. Tutorials are held before school and afterschool.

School Action Plan – The SDMC was presented information about the School Action Plan for 2024-2025. There are three Key Actions to improve the quality of Reading/ELA, Math, and Special Education instruction. Principal Hobbs reviewed the Indicators of Success for each Key Action. The committee was reminded that all Teachers were presented this plan for review during the September 3rd Professional Development Day. The professional staff and SDMC approved this plan. The committee was reminded that the School Action Plan is 15% of the staff’s appraisal. The other areas include Quality Instruction 30%; Student Achievement 35%; and Special Education 20%.
School Safety – Teachers and staff were reminded to download the Raptor Alert and My EOP as they will be used for drills along with the Campus Emergency Operation Procedures in the event of an emergency. Classroom doors should be locked and left open according to guidelines given to us by the superintendent. The exterior doors should always be locked and remain closed. If a door needs to be repaired, report it immediately to Principal Hobbs, our School Secretary, and Plant Operator.
Budget – The projection for this school year was 1200 students in accordance with the Office of School Choice guidelines. We currently have 1047 students in Grades K-8. We will continue to enroll students until the snapshot date. Our budget will not be impacted if we meet the 1040 enrolled and credited for last year.
Curriculum – HISD Curriculum and slide decks are being implemented this school year. All Rice School Teachers are implementing it with fidelity across grades K-8.
2024 Accountability Rating – HISD has determined our rating is a “B”.
