What is the TSI and why do I need to take it?

For the Dual Credit program in high school, the TSI Assessment is used to determine readiness for college level work.  The TSI has 3 tests - reading, writing and math.  A student may not need to test in all areas; the tested sections are determined by the course(s) a student wants to take.  If a student meets exemption requirements, they may be able take classes without needing the TSI Assessment.

    Exemption requirements are as follows:

      • SAT® – EBRW 480 or higher
      • ACT® – English 19 & Composite 23 or higher
      • PSAT/NMSQT® – EBRW 460 or higher
      • STAAR EOC English II – 4000 or higher

Minimum scores required for the TSI Assessment 2.0 are as follows:

      • ELAR (Reading & Writing) minimum score of 945
      • Essay, minimum score of 5
      • Math, minimum score of 950

    How can I practice?

Use the Mastery Prep program available through Waltrip high School. This is the best way to study (see Ms. Griffin for details). Also, you can get the Accuplacer Study App – Create an account and practice with sample questions.  More practice options can be found on the site.
