Your Career in the Health Industry Starts Here!
Jane Long Academy is 6-12 campus that is proud to have magnet programs for both its middle and high school students. Jane Long's Pharmacy Technician and Allied Health Professions program was selected based on data trends provided by Gulf Coast Workforce Solutions showing an increase in demand for health professionals in the Houston area. Further, our campus is located 6 miles from the Houston Medical Center, which allows students from traditionally unrepresented backgrounds equitable access to education in high demand, high projected growth industries.
Middle school students in the Allied Health Professions program get the chance to learn about the incredible variety of career fields available in the health industry through a combination of guest speakers, field trips, and special projects. The magnet program is part of the larger, comprehensive middle school, meaning students do not have to worry about missing out on electives and extracurricular activities. We offer a range of electives and sports, including football, volleyball, cheerleading, track, basketball, and soccer. Students who complete the Allied Health professions program are encouraged to apply for and continue with us in our Futures Academy.
The high school program was created when Jane Long Academy expanded its grade level offerings in the fall of 2012, beginning with 9th grade and expanding annually with one grade level culminating in a full-fledged 9-12 high school in 2015-2016. The class of 2016 was the first graduating class. The high school portion of the program was founded as one of 4 Houston Innovative Learning Zone (HiLZ) schools with the vision of offering dual credit courses in conjunction with HCC Coleman Campuses so that students had the flexibility and choice of obtaining an Associate of Allied Health degree paired with an industry certificate, or, an industry certificate, all in tandem with their high school diploma. The program has since changed to the HISD Futures Program, and is now one of 8 academies district-wide. The Futures Academy Programs are specifically tailored to meet the current and future needs of Houston's thriving industries. We encourage students from all high schools to apply, although attending the middle school program first is preferred.
