Teacher Selection Process

  • The Recruitment and Selection division of Human Resources handles the screening and hiring of principals, assistant principals, teachers, and other specialized school based staff members. Due to the volume of applicants for each open position, the process has changed to ensure the strongest candidate for each role is selected.

    Teacher Selection Process
    Phase 1: Online application

HISD’s new, streamlined online application form is easy to complete and submit. To get started, click here and follow the directions to start your application for employment today! Candidates who apply early will have the best chance of securing early contracts for the 2017-18 school year.
    2018-19 Priority Application Dates
First Application Priority Date: November 15, 2017
Second Application Priority Date:  December 20, 2017
Third Application Priority Date: February 14, 2018
Final Application Priority Date: April 18, 2018

Completed applications will be reviewed by a HISD’s Selection team for evidence of HISD Values, professional skills and relevant experience. Applicants who are determined to be a fit for the district, will further be reviewed for:
    • Certification and highly qualified (HQ) status
    • Academic Record
Phase 2: Entry into the hiring pool
Candidates who successfully pass the application and file review process will enter the ready to staff hiring pool. We anticipate an average of five days from screening the online application to entry into the hiring pool. Times may vary depending on volume of applicants. Once in the hiring pool, candidates will receive emailed instructions to:
    • Complete an online math assessment (Elementary/generalist candidates only)
    • Register for pre-scheduled in-person placement events with access to school leaders.

    Phase 3: Principal interviews
Principals will schedule interviews with candidates in the hiring pool. The interview process will differ per school, and in general can include sample lessons, writing samples, and content assessments. In-person placement events will be an opportunity for candidates to access Principals and school leaders and display skill sets to further the interview process.

Phase 4: Offer and verification of hire

Principals will make offers to the candidates they wish to hire. Both the candidate and the Human Resources Office will be notified at the point of offer.

    • Candidates wishing to accept an offer will be required to submit a signed contract electronically.
    • Offer remains contingent on final clearance of background check and eligibility to teach.
    • Within 7 days of the receipt of a signed contract, the HR office will confirm the status of the hire and the candidate will receive official notification.
