WELCOME TO THE LOVETT BAND PROGRAM

  • The Lovett Elementary Band Program / Director, Mr. Joshua Wunderlich

Welcome to Lovett Elementary School Band!

All groups perform throughout the school year. Flutophone (1st grade) and Recorder (2nd grade) literature consists mainly of traditional folk songs, but the Concert Band regularly plays Bach, Handel, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Holst, Mussorgsky, Grieg, Sibelius, and many other “classical” composers as well as the traditional marches of John Phillip Sousa and music of contemporary composers.

The Lovett Band Program has won local, state and national acclaim. The Concert Band has given three clinics at TMEA, is featured on a TEA video, and performed for many prestigious events in Houston, including opening ceremonies for the International Festival and Children’s Zoo.

Chosen in 1996 as the first elementary band to play at EPCOT Center for “Magic Music Days” and in 2004 for the Magic Kingdom, it represented Texas in the Washington, D.C.’s Bicentennial’s “National Festival of the States” in May 2000. The Band has earned trophies for top scores at the HISD Concert  Band Festivals each year since the first permitted to compete in 1993, holds many trophies for “Superior Performance” and “Outstanding in Class” won at state-wide Directors’ Choice Festivals, Honors from Disney and the City of Washington, D.C..

First graders learn the same elements of music using the FLUTOPHONE and second graders, the RECORDER. They are the Band for their respective grade levels, read music, and also play under the conductor’s baton. Students entering the third, fourth and fifth grades may begin instruction without having had this experience and play the instrument of choice except percussion (which requires a satisfactory coordination test.)
