PowerUp

About HISD PowerUp

  • A key component of HISD’s PowerUp initiative is ensuring that our schools, students, and staff have equitable access to technology –including devices, software, and infrastructure—which supports 21st century teaching and learning.  With greater access to technology also comes the need for educators and parents to work together to help students understand how the digital world works.

    One-to-One Laptop Programs

Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, HISD implemented a one-to-one student laptop program at 11 high schools with the goal of transforming teaching and learning throughout the district. Currently, all HISD high school students (approx. 50,000 students) are provided with a laptop providing them with 24-hour access to a digital device. Students can become the producers and evaluators of knowledge, not just consumers. The laptops allow students to locate, evaluate, and interpret information, as well as collaborate with others to engage in authentic, real-world tasks. Most importantly, students will develop the skills they need to compete in today’s 21st-century economy.

Mobile internet hotspots are also provided for students in need of internet access at home.
