Find all the information you need to know about this new school year, starting with the first 6 weeks of online instruction.
At Horn, we believe in educating the whole child by meeting each student’s academic and social-emotional needs. Many of you kindly took the time to share concerns regarding your child’s engagement and socialization during virtual learning. As a result, we are proud to announce the addition of a Campus Social Worker, Ms. Victoria Volanski, to our Horn family. Ms. Volanksi will serve as a valuable resource to our staff and students during these uncertain times.

HISD released its the 2020-2021 re-opening plan. With the safety of your child in mind, all HISD students will begin the school year virtually with the first day of school starting on Tuesday, September 8th, 2020. Here are some of the highlights of the district’s re-opening plan along with the next steps we are taking to ensure all students will be provided with exceptional instruction while learning from home.
With feedback from community members and staff, HISD has developed an instructional continuity plan for schools. The instructional continuity plan provides schools across the district with standard, detailed guidelines and expectations for virtual instruction. We thank the district for their work on this document and we are committed to reviewing the continuity plan for Horn to ensure it represents the high standard of learning we expect of our students.
Virtual learning will look drastically different than it did in the past with required live teaching, a highly structured daily schedule, interactive activities, and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Emphasis will be placed upon alignment to ensure that all students receive an equitable experience.

Given the increased the economic challenges some district families face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HISD has announced the suspension of the student uniform policy for the upcoming school year. Relaxing the uniform requirements will hopefully provide some relief for families as they prepare for the school year. If students have uniforms and wish to use them, they are still welcome to do so. Students will still be expected to follow the school appropriate dress code specified by Horn Elementary including:
- knee-length shorts, skirts, dresses and jumpers
- appropriate footwear for PE activities, no caps or hats worn inside
- no dangly earrings for safety reasons
- leggings worn with shorts, skirts, jumpers, and dresses
