NAVAL STATION GREAT LAKES, Ill. (April 29, 2011) - The Navy established a Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) program April 22 and is offering the program to qualifying secondary educational institutions.

The NNDCC program provides schools that do not qualify for a Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) unit an opportunity to provide a similar program designed to expand students' opportunities to gain the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.

"The statute establishing the NNDCC program was enacted in 2008, and the Navy has elected to use this authority to support student citizenship development programs," said Rear Adm. David Steindl, former commander of Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), which oversees the NNDCC program.

The NNDCC program is modeled on the NJROTC program except it is primarily funded by host schools.

"NNDCC units will use the NJROTC curriculum," Steindl said. "The cost incurred by the school includes instructor salaries, student uniforms and daily operational expenses. The Navy supplies curriculum material for NNDCC instructors and students, and the unit equipment necessary to execute the curriculum."
